30-Minute Dumbbell Full Body Workout

The workouts

Built by the same generator a MuscleBuddy account uses, for exactly this equipment. These are 2 of the 3 workouts in its week.

Notes from the generator

  • Full Body A has no vertical pull movement your equipment supports, so it was built without one.
  • Full Body C has no vertical pull movement your equipment supports, so it was built without one.
  • Core gets no direct movement: a limit of 5 main lifts per session leaves one slot for core or biceps, and biceps take it. Squats, deadlifts and overhead presses train your trunk.

Times are estimates: the prescribed rest plus about 30 seconds per set. RPE is effort on a 10-point scale, so RPE 8 leaves about two reps in the tank. The generator's Full Body B session came out at about 34 minutes, so it is left off this page.

Why these movements

Most of a strength session is rest. Fitting one into 30 minutes is mostly a question of how long you sit between sets, not how many exercises you cut.

These sessions use the shorter-rest prescription: 90 seconds between sets of the big lifts and 45 between the small ones, with each set stopped about three reps short of failure. That pace is sustainable, and it keeps a press and a leg movement in every session.

Short does not have to mean skipped. Across the sessions, goblet squats and lunges cover legs, presses cover chest and shoulders, and rows cover the back.

How to run it

  • Use a timer for rest. It is the easiest place to lose ten minutes.
  • Alternate the sessions on whatever days you train. Two or three a week covers the whole body more than once.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 30-minute workout enough?
Enough to train every major muscle hard more than once a week, yes. More time lets you add sets, but the session you actually do beats the longer one you skip.
Can I rest less to finish faster?
You can, but the sets that follow get weaker. The rest periods here are already short; cutting them further mostly trades lifting for breathing.
