What your protein costs, from prices you set
Enter what you pay for the foods you buy and MuscleBuddy turns it into cost per serving, per gram of protein and per 100 kcal. Your own prices take priority; anything you haven't priced falls back to a U.S. reference price.
The price you paid, saved once
Tell MuscleBuddy what a quantity of a food costs, in grams, milliliters or servings, and that price is used for that food from then on. No receipt scanning is needed. Until you set one, a U.S. account falls back to a seeded reference price instead of counting the food as zero, and each cost figure says which price it used.
From your price, MuscleBuddy works out cost per serving, cost per gram of protein and cost per 100 kcal. If protein is what you are shopping for, cost per gram of protein is the useful one: two foods at the same price per serving can differ several-fold per gram of protein.
A grocery list and a meal plan that show their math
Your grocery list shows a running estimated total and a cost per item as you build it, and your meal plan shows an estimated cost for the week. An item with no price is flagged instead of counted as zero.
Set a weekly food budget if you want one, and both show how much you have left or how far over you are. Going over blocks nothing.
What it covers
This tracks and plans spending on the food you log and plan. It is not financial advice and does not cover debt, credit or investing; full money management belongs in a separate product.
Spending on supplements, medication, therapy or labs is treated as health data. It needs the same consent as the rest of your health information, shows as withheld in your expense list if you haven't given it, and stays out of every social surface.
Each cost sits in the module that owns the number
Cost is not a separate module. It appears inside whichever module has the thing being priced. Cost per gram of protein is a Nutrition number: your grocery list comes from the meal plan Nutrition builds from your macro targets, so you are pricing what you will eat this week. A supplement stack's monthly cost is a Health number, priced from a price you set. Cost per workout (what a gym membership or a piece of equipment works out to per session) is a Training number.
Upkeep tracks its own recurring spending. Pantry items count against what the meal plan still needs, so the grocery total shows what is left to buy, not everything the week calls for.
Frequently asked
- Where do the prices come from?
Mostly from you: set a price for a quantity of a food and MuscleBuddy derives each cost figure from it, ahead of any fallback. A food you haven't priced falls back to a seeded U.S. reference price. The app uses no other price, and each figure says which one it used.
- What happens to items I haven't priced?
On a U.S.-currency account, they use a seeded reference price and still count toward the total, labelled as a reference price. Outside the U.S. that reference doesn't apply. Either way, MuscleBuddy flags an unpriced item instead of pricing it at zero.
- Does going over my weekly food budget block anything?
No. Your grocery list and meal plan show how much is left or how far over you are, and nothing else happens.
- Is this a full budgeting or finance tool?
No. It covers the food you log and plan: cost per serving, per gram of protein, per 100 kcal, and a weekly total. It isn't financial advice and doesn't cover debt, credit or investing.
- Is my supplement or medication spending treated differently?
Yes. Spending in the supplement, medication, therapy and labs categories is treated as health data. It needs your health-data consent and stays out of every social surface, whatever your other settings.
