Our mission
Coaching that reacts to your data
MuscleBuddy turns evidence-based training and nutrition into a coach that actually adjusts — automatically, transparently, and on your terms.
Algorithm-first
Progression, macro adjustments, and phase transitions are deterministic rule engines — not a chatbot guessing. The same inputs always produce the same plan, and every change is explained.
Reactive, not static
Training loads and calorie targets adjust to your real data — logged sets, rolling weigh-in averages, recovery signals — instead of a program you set once and forget.
Configurable, not opinionated
Progression methods, macro splits, deloads, carb cycling, refeeds — all configurable per person or per coach. The app is the tool, not the authority.
Why we built it
Most fitness apps hand you a static template and leave the hard part — reading your progress and changing the plan — entirely to you. Coaches do that work well, but a good one is expensive and can't watch every set and every weigh-in.
MuscleBuddy closes that gap. It reads your real training and nutrition data and adjusts the plan the way a competent coach would: progressing loads when you clear your targets, nudging calories off a rolling weigh-in trend, easing volume when recovery drops. Every adjustment comes with a plain-language reason, so you're never handed a change you can't understand.
Who it is for
MuscleBuddy is comprehensive enough for a competitive bodybuilder and approachable enough for someone trying to lose their first twenty pounds. Beginners get a clean, simple experience; advanced tools — periodization, contest prep, carb cycling, bloodwork and compound tracking — reveal themselves as you engage more deeply or as a coach unlocks them.
Coaches get first-class tools too. A coach configures methodology per client, overrides any AI suggestion, and builds reusable program templates. The engine assists a coach; it never overrides their judgment.
How the coaching works
The core logic is deterministic by design. Progression (double progression, linear, RPE, percentage, wave), macro auto-adjustment, deload timing, and phase planning are rule engines with tested, reproducible outputs — not model output you have to second-guess.
The language model has a narrower, well-defined role: conversational coaching, check-in analysis, and plain-language explanations of compound interactions. It explains and converses; it does not compute your program. That split keeps the numbers you train and eat by auditable.
Grounded in the evidence
Where the science is clear, MuscleBuddy's defaults reflect it. Where it is genuinely debated — carb cycling, refeeds, reverse dieting, specific macro ratios — the app presents the options without picking a winner and lets you or your coach decide. Our written guides are checked against the primary literature, and compound entries carry citations to their sources so you can read further.
MuscleBuddy is a training and nutrition tool, not a medical provider. It does not diagnose, treat, or prescribe. Health features such as bloodwork logging flag values against reference ranges for your awareness — discuss anything flagged with a qualified clinician.
Who is behind it
MuscleBuddy is built and maintained by a small, independent team pairing software engineering with strength-training and nutrition practice. Editorial content is published under The MuscleBuddy Team, whose coaching and sports-science background informs every guide, and reviewed against the research rather than opinion.
We are reachable and accountable: questions, corrections, and data-attribution issues go to garrett@garrettmakesit.com, and we fix what we get wrong.
Frequently asked
- Is MuscleBuddy an AI coach?
- Partly. The core calculations — progression, macro adjustments, deloads, phase planning — are deterministic rule engines, not AI. A language model handles conversational coaching, check-in analysis, and compound explanations. The numbers you train and eat by are computed by tested, reproducible logic you can audit.
- Do I need a coach to use it?
- No. MuscleBuddy works as a self-guided coach out of the box. If you do work with a coach, they can manage your programming and nutrition inside the same app, overriding any suggestion and setting their own methodology.
- Does MuscleBuddy give medical advice?
- No. It is a training and nutrition tool, not a medical provider. It does not diagnose, treat, or prescribe. Health features flag readings against reference ranges for your awareness only — discuss anything flagged with a qualified clinician.
- Is it free?
- There is a free tier covering core training, nutrition logging, daily check-ins, vitals, and basic supplement tracking. Advanced features — periodization, contest prep, bloodwork, the full Compounds KB, and AI coaching — are on the Pro tier. See the pricing page for the current breakdown.
