How to perform the Smith Machine Calf Raise

  1. Set the Smith bar across the upper traps and stand with the balls of the feet on a block, heels hanging free.
  2. The fixed vertical bar path removes any need to balance, so you can push the calves closer to failure safely.
  3. Straighten the legs so the gastrocnemius carries the load, and unrack the bar by rotating the hooks free.
  4. Lower the heels below the toes along the fixed path for a full stretch at the bottom.
  5. Pause in the deep stretch rather than bouncing the bar off the Achilles to rebound.
  6. Drive up to full plantarflexion on the balls of the feet, squeezing the calves before lowering again.

Suggested working range: 1220 reps. Default progression: double progression.

Common mistakes

  • Bouncing the bar off the Achilles at the bottom rather than pausing in the stretch.
  • Bending the knees, which shifts load off the gastrocnemius toward the soleus.
  • Doing short reps that never reach a deep bottom stretch or a full top squeeze.
  • Letting the block be too low so the heels cannot drop below the toes.

Variations & alternatives

Swap in a related movement if equipment, recovery, or progression demands it.
