How to perform the Smith Machine Calf Raise
- Set the Smith bar across the upper traps and stand with the balls of the feet on a block, heels hanging free.
- The fixed vertical bar path removes any need to balance, so you can push the calves closer to failure safely.
- Straighten the legs so the gastrocnemius carries the load, and unrack the bar by rotating the hooks free.
- Lower the heels below the toes along the fixed path for a full stretch at the bottom.
- Pause in the deep stretch rather than bouncing the bar off the Achilles to rebound.
- Drive up to full plantarflexion on the balls of the feet, squeezing the calves before lowering again.
Suggested working range: 12–20 reps. Default progression: double progression.
Common mistakes
- •Bouncing the bar off the Achilles at the bottom rather than pausing in the stretch.
- •Bending the knees, which shifts load off the gastrocnemius toward the soleus.
- •Doing short reps that never reach a deep bottom stretch or a full top squeeze.
- •Letting the block be too low so the heels cannot drop below the toes.
