How to perform the Leg Press Calf Raise
- Sit in the leg press and place only the balls of the feet on the lower edge of the platform, heels hanging off.
- Extend the legs to a near-straight but unlocked position so the load runs through the gastrocnemius.
- The pressing angle loads the calves along the line of the sled rather than straight down through the spine.
- Release the safeties and let the platform push the toes back, lowering the heels for a full stretch.
- Pause in the stretched position instead of letting the platform bounce off the bottom of the range.
- Press the platform away by extending the ankles to full plantarflexion, then lower under control.
Suggested working range: 12–20 reps. Default progression: double progression.
Common mistakes
- •Placing too much of the foot on the platform so the movement becomes a partial press.
- •Letting the platform bounce off the bottom instead of pausing in the stretch.
- •Locking the knees hard to help push rather than isolating the calves.
- •Cutting the range short and never lowering the heels for a full stretch.
