How to perform the Smith Machine Squat
- Position the bar across your upper back and set your feet slightly forward of the bar rather than directly under it.
- The fixed vertical bar path lets you place the feet ahead, shifting more emphasis onto the quads and unloading the lower back.
- Twist the bar to unhook it from the safety catches, then brace your core before descending.
- Lower straight down along the guided track until the thighs reach at least parallel, keeping the back flat against the movement.
- Because the machine controls balance, focus entirely on driving the quads rather than stabilizing side to side.
- Press back up along the track and rotate the bar to re-rack it onto the hooks only once you are standing tall.
Suggested working range: 8–12 reps. Default progression: double progression.
Common mistakes
- •Placing the feet directly under the bar so the fixed path forces the knees painfully far forward.
- •Forgetting to rotate the bar to catch the hooks and failing a rep with no way to bail.
- •Rounding the lower back at the bottom because the guided track lets you sink past a safe depth.
- •Treating the fixed path as a free squat and leaning into the bar instead of staying stacked.
