What is the EZ-Bar Curl?
The EZ-bar curl is a biceps isolation using the angled, zig-zag EZ bar instead of a straight barbell. The bends let the wrists sit in a slightly rotated, more natural grip, which keeps the wrists and elbows comfortable while still loading both arms together for easy progressive overload.
Muscles worked
- Primary: Biceps
- The biceps brachii flexes the elbows to curl the bar up; the semi-supinated EZ grip keeps the biceps heavily involved while easing wrist strain.
- Secondary: Forearms
- The forearm flexors assist with elbow flexion and grip on the angled bar.
How to perform the EZ-Bar Curl
- Grip an EZ-bar on its angled inner knurls with a semi-supinated grip, standing tall with the elbows tucked to the sides.
- The cambered bar lets the wrists sit in a slightly rotated, more neutral angle, which spares the wrists compared with a straight barbell curl.
- Brace the core and hold the upper arms vertical and still throughout the movement.
- Curl the bar upward by flexing the elbows while keeping the wrists firm on the angled grip.
- Squeeze the biceps just past vertical, keeping the elbows from swinging forward to shorten the lever.
- Lower the bar under control to full extension before beginning the next rep.
Suggested working range: 8–12 reps. Default progression: double progression.
Mechanics
A single-joint isolation: elbow flexion with the upper arms fixed at the sides, loading both arms on one bar. The EZ bar’s angled grips place the wrists in a partial supination that is gentler on the joints than a fully supinated straight bar.
Form cues
- •Grip the inner angled section so your wrists sit in a comfortable, slightly rotated position.
- •Keep the elbows pinned to your torso and curl by bending only the elbows.
- •Squeeze the biceps at the top without swinging the torso back to heave the bar.
- •Lower under control to a full stretch rather than dropping the bar to the thighs.
Common mistakes
- •Swinging the torso and using momentum to heave the bar up instead of strict elbow flexion.
- •Letting the elbows travel forward at the top to shorten the lever.
- •Bending the wrists under load rather than keeping them firm on the angled grip.
- •Failing to lower to full extension, cutting the range of motion short.
Variations & alternatives
- •Straight-bar barbell curl: keeps the wrists fully supinated for maximal biceps tension.
- •Preacher curl with an EZ bar: braces the arms to remove all momentum.
- •Reverse curl, flipping to a pronated grip on the EZ bar to hit the forearms.
- •Dumbbell curl, independent arms that even out side-to-side imbalances.
Programming: sets, reps & when to use it
Program the EZ-bar curl in the library’s 8–12 rep range as a primary biceps accessory: it’s the easiest curl to load progressively while staying joint-friendly. Run it after your back and pulling work, adding small increments over time within that range. A few strict sets is enough.
Frequently asked questions
EZ bar or straight bar for curls?
The EZ bar’s angled grip keeps the wrists in a more natural position and is easier on the joints for most people, while a straight bar keeps the forearms fully supinated for a slightly stronger biceps contraction. Use whichever lets you curl pain-free and keep progressing.
Where on the bar should I grip?
Grip the inner set of angles for a narrower, more biceps-focused curl, or the outer angles for a slightly wider grip. Both are fine, so choose the one that keeps your wrists comfortable under load.
Use this exercise in a program
The EZ-Bar Curl fits naturally into hypertrophy and strength splits that prioritize biceps volume.
